Dear Mom,

Received your letter written from Red Bank you probably had a nice few days away from home and I am happy you did. I am O.K. everything is as well as can be at this time. Weather is still up and down and it keeps you on your toes trying to figure out what is going to happen next.

I have increased my monthly allotment to $60 and so up to now you should have received two checks. However back in July I sent throu the govt 60.52 and that is the one I had reference to in the last letter. Have you received a check for that amount? Please let me know. I am also going to send home in a few days a money order for $50. You might fix all the kids up with Chanukah presents.

Received Millie’s letter and now know that Henry R. is in Holland. I hope to write him soon myself.

How is business? Read today of a real hot spell at home so that probably means that business is a little bit off. I hope I am wrong and that it is still good in both stores.

By the time you get this letter the election will be over and so a lot of bull will stop coming over the radar. I expect it to be the fourth straight time that I voted for the loser: By now I am getting used to picking them wrong and to be honest about it. I really believe that I made a mistake by not voting the other way. However, it won’t make much difference.

Not much else to write you at this time My best regards to Ellie, his wife and the upstairs family and to you take good care of yourself. I’ll write again soon. Yours Love Louie

Dear Mom,

Just a few lines to let you know that I am well and that everything is going along O.K.

I happened to get a bit lucky so am enclosing a money order for $100. Do with it as you want.

I just received a nice box which Rose sent me on the 18th of Sept.

Had our first snow the other day and tho it looked pretty it isn’t very pleasant to live in.

How is business? I hope it is keeping up to or is better than last year.

I am glad that F.D. got in. Not much else to say regards to Ellie and tell the rest of the family I’ll write as soon as allowed. Take care of yourself Love Louie

Dear Helen

Just a few lines to let you know that I am well and everything is going along as well as possible at this time. We have been a bit busy and so haven’t had the time to keep up with my mail and also our mail hasn’t kept up with us. However, it should start rolling around a lot better now.
Haven’t been to any new places or seen anything that I could make into an interesting travelogue so won’t mention anything at all. We have had our first snow and can say that we aren’t looking forward to a pleasant winter. How are Henry and the kids. I hope he is busy and well. Not much else to say of this. Regards to all. As always. Louie

Dear Mom,

Just a few lines to let you know that I am well and as happy as can be under the existing conditions.

Received a package from Rose and it was very nice. All the boys liked the contents very much.

As yet haven’t had a reply from Mayo or Henry but I suppose they are too busy to write.

How is business? Has cold weather started as yet? I hope we get a real big season as I know both stores probably could stand a year end boost. I know C + R could and I hope they both get it.

Sam is now in the same class as Dewey so he shouldn’t feel to bad over not getting elected.

How is the family actress? Was she a big hit? If so the poor kid will have to have a new (?) maid.

From all reports I should be getting a lot of packages. I am looking forward to receiving them as are all the men over here! Mail first then packages is the way they run in importance.

Right now things are quiet. A bit of snow and rain and cold weather all mashed up together. So we are busy building fires in order to get a little warmth. It could be lots worse.

Not much else to write at this time. Tell Ellie I hope he is very busy and contented with the stores. Regards to the rest of the family and take good care of yourself. Love Louie

Dear Mom,

Glad to get your recent letters and happy to learn that all of you at home are well. I am O.K. and hope that it never gets any worse than it is right now.

I received a reply from Mayo Cohen and I guess we are not as close to each other as we thought we were. He is well and writes of meeting a couple of boys from Willimantic and Amsilan(?). So far I haven’t had very much luck in that respect.

We are starting to get Xmas packages here and even now as I write I am eating a piece of fruit cake. Not as good as yours.

Not much to tell you of our doings here as there isn’t much I can say. Expect snow and cold very soon and are almost ready for it.

Regards to Ellie his wife and the Moskowitzs. Take good care of yourself I’ll write again soon Love Louie

Did Grandpa Sam run for some kind of public office around this time in Willimantic?

"I am O.K. and hope that it never gets any worse than it is right now." Based on this it looks like the fighting in the Hurtgen forest is really starting to heat up.
