Dear Mr. Hurwitz,
I have your letter of December 3rd about the report that your wife’s brother, Corporal Louis Cohen, has been wounded in action. I am taking this matter up with the War Department to see if there is any additional information concerning his condition, and I will advise you as soon as I hear from them.
I know that it is a fact that the War Department is very prompt in forwarding any information to the next of kin of soldiers who are wounded, so I strongly suspect that there is no additional news, and as soon as a further report is received you will be immediately notified.
However, I am very glad to be of service in this instance.
Sincerely yours,
James C. Auchincloss, M.C.

So not only was it two plus weeks after he was wounded did the Army notify the family but also they were not forthcoming in any information about the injury.
Wow - how terrifying - his mother was informed, by telegram, only that her son was "seriously injured" - no other details for weeks. That could mean just about anything.
