Dear Louie –
Feel very guilty for not having written you sooner but there’s about 6 things I don’t like to do and all six are to write letters. Was very happy to hear from you and hear that you are nearby in this part of the country. Though as far as I’m concerned they ought to give the south back – I don’t like it. The only thing worthwhile to do here is to get the HELL out.
I’ve been unhappy and uncomfortable ever since I’ve been here and would sure give anything to get back into action again – This isn’t the reason I’m in the Navy – I examine niggers all day long to see if they’re fit to work in the yard.
Had hoped that you ought to be up soon but I may have a few days off later on. Let me know where you are – if possible will drive down to see you.
Let’s hear from you soon and my love to all at home when you write them again.

Dear Folks,
Just a few lines to let you know that I am well and hope that you are all the same at home.
I am still on the same easy job and getting a little tired of hanging around without anything to do. If I keep this job up very long I’ll gain back all the pounds I lost.
If nothing happens I expect to get home on my furlough by next Tuesday. Of course anything can happen to postpone it a few days. Any way this week-end I think I’ll spend in Red Bank.
Well, I guess I have covered about everything so will close with best regards to all at home. Love Louie

Dear Mom,
Received your letter and was happy to read that Din was all set and getting on well. Also that Rose’s kid was well now.
It has been very hot here and expect that it will stay that way.
Have been kept busy and expect to be that way for a little while. I do expect to get my furlough about the 1st but have decided not to count on anything until it happens.
Not much else to write except that I hope you take things easy with the kids around and don’t overdose yourself this weather.
Regards to Millie, Sam Ellie and all the rest Yours Love Louie

Dear Mom,
Just a few lines to let you know that I am well and hope that you all at home are the same.
It has been very hot here the last few days and so it is very uncomfortable.
Well, I have a new job. I am now doing clerking in the classification section of the personnel office. This job can lead to a good job if I can handle it. I don’t anticipate any trouble doing it as from what I can gather of it is so far it isn’t very hard.
So I am a little more satisfied here as it is a better job than the last one.
I don’t know if I will get away this weekend or not. If I can get away I may go to Red Bank.
Well, I guess I have covered everything so will close with love to all Love Louie
P.S. I won’t call this Sunday as it isn’t necessary Louie

Dear Mom,
I received your letter and am glad to hear that you are going go to enjoy Atlantic City.
I know the change will be good for you and I would like to see you stay there a couple of weeks at least.
I don’t know if I can get down there Sunday as we may have to go out on the rifle range for the week-end. If we don’t I’ll try to get down there.
Not much else so will close again saying to have a good rest. Regard to Mrs. Liberty Love Louie

As in the 6/8/43 letter: Who's Bernard R. (Bernard Rothblat)? A cousin of Louie's?
June 23, 1943 letter:
What was wrong with Dinny?
