Idle Gossip Sinks Ships
Sunday (Jan 1943?)
Dear Mom,

I enjoyed talking to you this morning and was glad to hear that you are all fine and feeling well.

After I talked to you I spoke to the fellow who takes care of the furloughs and things like that. After he looked up where I stood it looks as if I will be home, that is if things remain as they are now, about the middle of February. So I don’t think you should send me the money next Friday. Hold it until I let you know a few days before I go on the furlough so that I’ll have it when I need it.

I don’t want to be a wet blanket but at the same time, as I said before, any kind of a change can be made so I don’t want you to figure on it to much as I don’t want to give you a big disappointment in case I can’t get one.

Well, thanks in advance for the money you sent out and I’ll write soon again.

I don’t think I’ll call next Sunday, that is I hope I don’t have to meaning that I hope things stay as they are.

Regards to all Louie

Friday (Jan 1943?)
Dear Mom,

Just a few words now so that you know that things are well here.

I won’t call Sunday as there has been and I hope, won’t nothing new take place to change things here.

Just as I finished and mailed my last letter to you if started to rain and then it turned very cold and that weather has stayed with us since then. From what I have seen so far of weather down south I would rather be up north where you know that it will be cold and so you get used to it and don’t mind it.

A new order on furloughs has just come out and I am happy about it as it increases the furloughs from 7 to 10 days which means that with trains slowed up and schedules all mixed that I should get at least 6 or 7 days at home. I spoke to the man in charge and he said I should go home around the 15th of Feb so I can look forward to that with a lot of pleasure.

I’ll probably ask you to send about $20 to reach me about the 10th.

Well not much else to write Regards to all tell Millie I’ll write her in a few days.

Love Louie

Thursday (Jan? 1943?)
Dear Folks,

Just a few lines to tell you that things are the same here and that nothing new has happened or been (?)

I have been kept very busy as we are changing all the men’s old equipment for new and it is quite a job as we have 225 men in our company. I don’t mind it as it means doing business somewhat like I used to only the customer here is never right so the result is that some of them hold a grudge for the getting the wrong size but they get over that.

It has rained every night for the last four nights and because it got dark early I couldn’t go to the shul but I try my best go when I can.

Not much else to write got Ellie’s letter and am very happy that everything is working out so well. I hope it keeps up.

Regards to all Love Louie

P.S.
I’ll try to call Sunday morning if I don’t I’ll write Sundays. I think it costs too much to call.

Dear Mom,

Just a few lines to let you know that I am well and hope that you and the rest of the folks at home are the same.

Nothing new has happened here. We continue with our regular work and keep having inspections of all kinds every day.

The weather here has been very nice the last few days it has been nice and warm but I suppose because I write about it it will rain and turn very cold.

I can hardly wait the next three weeks until I get my furlough. I really want to get home to see everyone and the town.

I received an acknowledgement from the government about sending $25 a month out of my pay to you. It may be a little while after the first before you get a check but I guess U.S. is good for $25.

We there isn’t much else to write now so will close with regards to all and take care of yourself.

Love Louie

Thursday (Jan? 1943?)
Dear Folks,

Just to let you know that I received Ellie’s letter with the check.

I am not using the check as it is too much trouble to get it cashed. Next letter send $30 in cash as I might get a furlough. Don’t stop the check as I might cash it anyway but send the money.

Not much news has been very cold and not at all like the weather we had been having.

Well, regards to all and hope to see all of you in a couple of weeks although I can’t bank on it.

As always Louie

Thursday (Jan? 1943 letter:
It's amazing that the Army matched his own skill set with a specific job in the service. I bet most servicemen weren't as fortunate.
