Tuesday (May? 1942?)
Dear Folks,

Have just finished a walk around town and enjoyed seeing some houses with paint on them.

It has been very hot here. The same as July at home. Gardens are in bloom and the places look better around here.

Tomorrow we learn how to shoot a machine gun.

I have lost 15 pounds since I am here and I feel fine. I would like to lose about 15 more but don’t expect to.

I sent Millie two photos one for her and one for you. I am having one enlarged to send home.

I am happy to hear about the good breaks the town is getting and know that everyone will benefit.

I would like the Chronicle as I miss the news. So if you can get it sent I would appreciate it.

Not much else to write. Will try to call Sat or Sun. But it is payday Thursday and the lines are terribly busy but will try anyway. Tell Pa to care of himself. Regards to all Love Louie

Dear Mom,

Have just come into town and am in the Jewish U.S.O. this is a pleasant place to spend a couple of hours.

We have been very busy learning different things about things.

It has been very hot here and I am as brown as an Indian and I suppose by the time I get home I’ll look like two Indians.

We take hikes with packs and gas masks and other things so it is quite a load to carry but I am getting broken in to it and don’t mind it.

How is Pa feeling? And how are things in the stores?

Tell Ellie to write me about business and what is going on in the store about prices and other things.

Please have him send me 3 sets of underwear the better undershirts 42 and 40 on the 390 kt (?) shorts.

Also don’t send anything to eat because it is so hot down here that when it comes it is not in good condition.

Also please send me some money as I am running out.

I don’t know where it goes but it does.

Regards to Millie, Sam and lots of love, Louie

P.S. Have Ellie put in a box of matches.

Why were they training with gas masks? Was there a threat of chemical warfare?
