Dear Mom,
I meant to write you a lot sooner but was very busy so just couldn’t. Received your last four letters and am happy to learn that all of your are well.
You, in case you receive notice that I have been wounded please don’t let it worry you. I have had a little bit of a wound and there is nothing serious at all about it. The doctor says that all I need is a little rest and after that I’ll be able to take up where I left off. The most important part about the whole thing is my getting a Purple Heart which gives me points toward getting home soon.
The one thing I don’t like is the fact that mail from home will be chasing me all over and I don’t know when it will start reaching me. So far I have no new permanent address to give you so write using my old address until I let you know to do otherwise.
I guess all those packages sent out to me will be a bit mildewed by the time I get them.
I guess I have covered all that I can at this time so again in case of a telegram coming just rip it up and again don’t worry as I will be O.K. before long. Tell the gang that I’ll write them soon. Best regards to all of them Take care of yourself Love Louie

Dear Mom,
Have finally arrived at the place I expect to be for enough time is that you can use the address.
I am feeling fine and expect to O.K. before long. My injury is a banged up eye that is a hemorrhage but the doctors say that it will wear itself out after a little while. I don’t want you to worry about it as I will have full use of it. I am very lucky or rather thank the good Lord as I could have been very much worse.
Not much else to say at the time. I’ll write often and keep you posted. I expect it to take a little while before I get mail from home as it means back tracking. Regards to all the family. Love Louie

Dear Mom,
Just to let you know that I am fine and that everything is going along O.K.
It is quite a change to get regular meals, sleep between clean sheets, take a shower whenever you feel like it and at least feel like a human being again. Five months of combat takes a lot out of a person and even tho hospitalized it is a welcome change. My injury is not a serious one but one that will take a bit of time to get over. I really thank the Lord that I got off as easy as I did.
Meanwhile my biggest worry is and will be for a while, my not getting any mail from home. All the mail and packages en route will go to Germany and then back here that will mean some time.
I had my first plane ride when I was flown back here and it is not as exciting as we is led to believe. Just like an auto ride.
Not much else to say at this time My best regards to all the folks. Take good care of yourself. Love Louie

Dear Helen
Meant to write sooner but have been a bit busy. Am now getting a rest besides a lot of hospital care on a bad eye which will, in time, be as good as ever.
I’d like for you to reassure Mom that I am very honest with her when I say it wasn’t as bad as it seems.
Haven’t had any mail for some time and don’t expect any for a while as it takes a bit of time before mail catches up with you. Regards to Henry and the Kids. As ever Louie

Dear Mom,
Just a few lines to let you know that I am O.K. and that everything is fine. I hope all of you at home are well.
England’s weather hasn’t changed any in the last 7 months. It is cold rainy and miserable.
I am getting very good care and attention. It’s almost what you would get if you had to pay for it. And I get it for nothing. I guess I am pretty lucky.
What’s new at home? How is business? I hope both stores are having big seasons.
Did you get the money I sent in Nov? One was for $100 and the other, which was the first sent out was for $50. Let me know.
Not much else to write at this time regards to all the gang. Take good care of yourself Love Louie
P.S. Any worrying about me is total loss so don’t’ do any. Louie

With regards to his injury it could be that some artillery shell exploded near him and some debris hit him in the face injuring his eye.
