Idle Gossip Sinks Ships
Sunday (September, 7? 1942?)
Dear Mom,

I received your letter and was very glad to hear that all is well at home. I would have called up this morning but I couldn’t quite understand from your letter whether or not you would be home and also as there isn’t much new that has happened I’ll now wait until next week some time.

I think you are right in not going away for Yontif. Your place and home is there and I think that you will feel better by being home for the Holy Days. I probably will stay in camp for the two days as Augusta will be very crowded. A special service is going to be held in camp. So I’ll have to make allowances for it if it isn’t the kind of service I’d like to attend.

I asked the Rabbi here about saying Yizker. He said it isn’t said during the first year. I suppose he knows but I would hate to find out later that I should have said it.

Things in camp are the same. I get quite a little work some days and then I get a few easy ones. If we are here long enough, and it looks right that we will be here some time, I will get a few days furlough. But all this depends on what takes place.

Well, Mom, there isn’t much else I can say other than that I hope that from now on the Holidays will be much happier ones and that we all enjoy a lot more of them.

Best regards to Ellie, Millie + Sam and Best wishes to them all for a Happy New Year. Love Louie

Dear Mom and All,
I just received yours and Millie’s letter and am glad to hear that you all came thru the holidays so nicely.
I am glad that you like the picture but I really think that it flatters me as I don’t think I am as thin as I might look in that picture.
As I told you over the phone, I spent Rosh Hashanah in Augusta and I plan to do the same thing for Yom Kippur.
I would have rather been home but that couldn’t be so will have to make the best of things.
I got your box of cookies and things and thanks a lot for them.
If we are still here the latter part of October I might then get a furlough but no one knows what’s going to happen so I am not planning on anything.
Not much else to write give my regards to all. I’ll try to call Mon. nite after Shul.
Until then Love Louie

Dear Mom,
Just a few lines to let you know that I am O.K. and that not much here that is new has happened.
I was very glad to know how well you sounded last Mon. I know that things will come around for you after a little while.
Not much else to write. Regards to all. Love Louie

Dear Folks,

As there is nothing new of great importance that has happened in the last few days I have decided to write you instead of spending your money on a telephone call.

This morning we went on a picnic and had a real nice time laying around and eating like pigs.

My sergeant asked me if I would like a furlough and of course I jumped at it but when he found out that I had been home in May he said I’d have to wait until 6 months had passed although he felt that I should be allowed to go now. He also said that there is a slim chance of the rule being changed. I hope so.

I just came to town and am writing this before going to Shul.

I hope your labor troubles are pretty nearly settled.

Not much else to write give my regards to the John St. division. Love to all Louie

P.S. I’ll write again soon.
