Sat. Aug 1 (1942?)
Dear Folks,
Have just been told that I can go back to duty tomorrow. I am not to sorry as I was going crazy down here. You get fed up with hanging around and not doing anything.
It has been terribly hot down here the last few days and I guess it will keep up for quite a while.
I don’t know where I will be after maneuvers as when we left Camp Gordon we packed up everything. We may go back there and if we do I am going to try to get a furlough for the Holidays. So when you next write please tell me what days Rosh Hashanah comes on.
Don’t bank on it too much because it won’t be easy to get away.
Well, I”ll write in a couple of days. I may find out something when I get back to my company.
Regards to all Love Louie

Dear Mom,
Just to let you know that I am still here in the hospital. I was supposed to go back to my outfit last Saturday but some fellows stole my pants and I had to stay. Now my company has gone back to Camp Gordon and I have to wait here until this Friday when they will send patients from my division back by train.
So I guess I’ll be back in Camp Gordon by Sunday. I don’t know how long I’ll be there but when I get back I’ll hear all the rumours and try to let you know what’s what.
I suppose by now that the stores are pretty well set. It will make things a lot easier for all of you.
Not much else to write use my Camp Gordon address until I let you know differently. Regards to all Love Louie

Dear Mom,
I didn’t call this morning as there was nothing new that I could tell you and as you had called only Friday.
I got back here Saturday morning and heard all the rumours and after listening to all of them it is best to forget all of them until something does happen. I expect that we will have to get used to these things as that is the way they are and nothing can be done about it. So until something actually happens I am not going to mention it anymore but you will have to keep your chin up and take whatever happens as well as you have everything else so far.
I went back into the supply room to work but as my first sergeant was not here I don’t know if I will stay there. I found a lot of mail and had a lot of reading to do.
So far no furloughs are being granted but if we are here in Camp Gordon after the 24th of this month chances are pretty good of getting one.
Well, I guess that is all that I can say at this time. I hope that I can write better letters from now on as I hate to annoy you but I don’t want to kid you as you don’t want it that way.
Give my regards to all Love Louie

Dear Folks,
Just a few lines to tell you that I am O.K. and not in the hospital as I had written Millie. I felt better and so I take treatments twice a week. My commander is going to speak to the doctor and see if he can’t get me transferred to a non combatant unit which sounds pretty good: I hope he can swing it but I doubt it.
We are getting ready to move somewhere in about a month or so and it will be the best time for sure to get changed over.
Well, not much else to write now but I will write in a couple of days. I don’t think I will call Sunday as I don’t know of any real need of me spending your money for you. So best regards to all Love Louie
Wed (8/19/42?)
Dear Folks,
Just a few lines to let you know that I am O.K. and still here.
The weather has been fairly warm and sultry I am still in the supply room as yet.
I hate to bother you but I missed my pay because I was in the hospital and won’t get paid until the 1st of September so if you can send me some more money I could use it very nicely.
How is business? I hope it is continuing to be good as at least that will be some consolation for a few things.
I was sorry to hear about Chaim. I hope he is better.
Well, that’s about all I can say so will close with regards to all Love Louie
P.S. If possible I will call Sunday morning Louie

Dear Mom + All (I guess that means Ellie),
Just a few lines to say that I am feeling quite a lot better.
I just came to town and made the Shul just on time for Marif (?) and I was glad that I did. The salvation (?) remains the same. We got a few new men in here the last couple of days.
Our general is trying to get us sent overseas. He is a rough, tough manager (?). I hope he doesn’t succeed and yet if he does I am beginning not to mind the idea.
The weather down here is terrific. In the morning it is very damp and cold and then it warms up and about 2:00pm it gets real hot.
I got a notice from the probate court about the appointment of an administrator for the estate. I guess it is a matter of form.
As to the drive I think $100 dollars is quite nice. You do after all have a lot of obligations. Also don’t forget the entitlement on the mortgage of the house is done.
Well not much else to write now Love to all Louie
P.S. I’ll write again in a couple days Louie

Dear Mom,
Just got your letter with contents O.K.
I was very glad to hear you over the phone and the way you sounded everything seems O.K. I am glad that it is and hope it keeps that way.
I still have hopes of getting home for a couple days. So forget a trip down here as it would be the worst thing you could do.
Not much else to say. Regards to all. Love Louie

The fact that he is trying to get transferred shows you that his medical problem wasn't insignificant. But the fact that he didn't get the actual transfer makes on realize how much the Army needed soldiers.
Monday (August? 1942 letter:
Could this "rough tough manager" be Patton or did Louie serve under Patton later during the war when they actually were in Europe? I believe his company merged with the 4th Infantry later in the war.
I did not even know that Uncle Louis had a problem. It seems that their is a lot of tedium involved in his time in Georgia. I do feel that Jay is coorrect that the military needed as many men as possible. Phil
