Dear Mom,
Just a few lines to let you know that I am fine and hope that everyone home is the same.
We are leaving here Tuesday and where we’re going in North Carolina it is very thinly settled and I may not be able to call you up.
We have been very busy packing up all our winter clothing as we are going to leave them here. We also have been chuking(?) up our equipment and as they have put me to work in the supply room I have been kept very busy getting the rest of the boys fixed up.
It won’t be quite as comfortable as in camp but I’ll get a real touch of outdoor life.
Well will close with best of love to all Yours Louie
P.S. Don’t forget

(typewritten)
Dear Ma,
The weather here it fine and I am enjoying my experience of staying in the woods. I will try to call you up as soon as I get a chance to go to town when that will be I don’t know. Please don’t worry about me I will take very good care of myself. The boys are all nice and they treat me swell. This is his boss typing this letter for Louie and I am getting a big kick out of typing it as Louie is dictating it. I will take very good care of your little boy (handwritten) as this is the third maneuver I’m pulling Hopeing you all are in the best of health and it was a pleasure to type this letter for Louie.
(handwritten)
Dear Mom.
Just to say that the above is right. So regards and best wishes to all.
Let me know how you make out with Izzie and the other things. I won’t be able to keep in touch as often but I will write often anyway. The delay comes in mailing and getting mail.
So till the next one Love Louie
Dear Mom, (July 1942?)
Just a few lines to let you know that I am O.K.
I tried to call up but could not make it so I guess that until maneuvers are over it will be very hard for me to call you but if I can do so I will.
I have been sleeping out in the woods and it is quite a new experience but I am getting used to it. We are going to be moving around quite a lot in the next 2 months and it will be a lot different than being in one camp all the time.
I enjoyed the letter made up of everyone’s letters it was quite different.
Well, not much else to write, regards to all, I hope that you move without too much trouble. Love Louie
Wed. July 15, (1942?)
Dear Mom + Ellie
Just a few lines to tell you that everything is O.K. and that I am allright.
We are still going along in the woods living like Indians.
The weather here is much hotter than what it was in Camp Gordon.
We expect to work problems for three days and then rest 3 or 4 days so that way we ill in the 2 months have about 8 different problems.
I have a little bladder trouble so they are giving me treatment for it and I am coming along fine there is nothing to worry about. All the doctors are from Roosevelt Hosp. N.Y and they are very good.
I suppose all the plans for the stores changes are set.
Well, not much else to write, so will close with best regards to all.
Love, Louie

Friday (July 17? 1942?)
Dear Mom,
Just to let you know that I am here in the hospital in Fort Bragg to be checked up.
There is nothing seriously wrong with me but the Army is very thorough and they want to find out why I didn’t feel well.
It really is a vacation as all I do is hang around and get good food.
I could use about five dollars as I left my money in my camp and I can’t get it. If you have my dividend check, sign it and send me the money as it is too hard to cash it here.
I guess that that is all I can write except that there is nothing to worry about because I am O.K.
So until the next letter, take good care of yourself.
Regards to all Love Louie
My address is

American Red Cross Sunday, July (?) 1942
Dear Folks,
I have just tried to call you this morning but without any luck. The telephone service here is terrible. There is only one phone and you can’t even get the operator.
I am O.K. so far nothing has shown up and I know nothing will. Meanwhile I had a good vacation.
They will probably keep me here a few more days so if you write send the letter by air and special delivery.
It is hot as the dickens and getting hotter.
I guess I am a little lucky as it must be getting warm out in the woods.
There is not much else to write so give my regards to all and don’t worry about me as there is nothing wrong at all.
I will write you as soon as I know when I am going back so I don’t think you should write to me here at least (?)
Until Then Louie
American Red Cross Monday, July (?)1942
Dear Mom,
I don’t have to tell you how glad I was to hear you over the phone this morning.
I didn’t think to tell you to call because I felt that I should do the calling.
Since you called I had another examination and the doctor found that I had a very slight inflammation of the bladder.
He is Jewish and so I wasn’t backward and asked him if it was serious and he said that it wasn’t and that there is nothing for me to worry about. He said that the treatments would fix me up in about two weeks. While he told me this I asked if it had to be that long and so he said “whats’ your hurry to go back for. It’s a lot easier here.” So I guess he is right. So you can write for the next two weeks to me here.
Other than that I feel fine and could go back right now but I guess I’ll stay and take it easy as he said.
How are things at home? I haven’t received any mail since July 10 when I left my camp.
Mom if you want you can call Sunday morning. Try to put in your call before 8:00 and it won’t take so long. I heard this (?)
Regards to all, Love Louie
American Red Cross Wednesday, Noon, July (?) 1942
Dear Mom,
I just received your letter and thanks for the money.
As for myself my ward doctor told me that I am not so bad and that my trouble would straighten out itself and that he might send me back to my outfit pretty soon.
So the way he talks I guess I am not so very sick.
But I am going to stay here as long as they will let me as reports are that maneuvers are not so easy and this place is a lot better to be at.
Anyway, what ever happens I guess I’ll be O.K.
Not much else to write. Regards to all. I”ll write just before I go back.
Love to all Louie
P.S.
I don’t think its necessary to call as there isn’t much now. Louie
Wednesday (July? 29? 1942?)
Dear Mom + All,
Just a few lines to tell you that I am still here taking things easy and having a real rest.
I probably will go back Saturday to my outfit.
I am getting a little tired of hanging around as I have been here about 3 weeks up to Saturday and I will gain back all the weight I lost. I suppose I shouldn’t worry about that as I can lose it just as easily.
I hope that you don’t have to much trouble moving although it’s a darn hard job.
I am glad to hear that the sale went over so good. It will give you a little extra money to use.
I guess the way things look that you might as well spend the money on fixing up the stores otherwise you will have to pay big taxes.
Did Izzy straighten out things? I was sorry to hear about Slim. I hope he gets out of it.
Well best regards to all and take care of yourselves. Love Louie
P.S.
Don’t try to call I’ll call the first chance I get Louie
Friday (July 31, 1942?)
Dear Mom,
Just a few lines to tell you that my vacation is about over and that I am going back to my company in a day or two so write to me at A.P. O #4
Dilworth (?)
I am O.K. They didn’t do anything for me so I guess I wasn’t too sick for which I am not sorry I suppose that by the time you get this you will have all the plans finalized to move the stores.
It has been very hot here but the last couple days it has been a lot cooler.
Not much else so
Regards to all
Love Louie

It's amazing that this medical issue, his relatively advanced age and his apparently not being in ideal shape didn't excuse him from service.
July 31, 1942 letter:
What plans were there to move the stores? I assume it was both the kids and the mens store?
